Member Spotlight: Kate Ayres

Salma Preppernau

Kate Ayres is a Confluence AmeriCorps Member serving as a Community Education Specialist with Solar Oregon.

Kate’s primary focus with Solar Oregon is to increase awareness in underserved communities about the benefits of solar and clean energy. Kate is conducting educational workshops, tabling events, and interactive activities related to solar energy and energy efficiency.

IMG-8160.jpg

Kate shares her story of service:

After recently completing a master’s degree in Environmental Policy and Management, I was super excited to step into a career in the environmental sector back in my home state of Oregon. Confluence Environmental Center’s position with Solar Oregon as their Community Education Specialist came at just the right moment during a very challenging period of time for many across the country. Through my previous experience in education and community development, I’ve solidified my love for empowering communities through utilizing their own knowledge and sharing educational tools that allow them to gain access to resources and opportunities that create real change. My work with Solar Oregon is allowing me to expand on that previous experience by utilizing my skills within the renewable energy sector.

So far with my service at Solar Oregon, I have been able to target agriculture communities, help a project spearheaded by the African Alliance for Homeownership to increase directed education to African American audiences across the Portland Metro area, and have helped build out Solar Oregon’s peer to peer storytelling program which focuses on highlighting stories of individuals who have regularly been left out of the solar narrative.

Being able to focus education surrounding clean, renewable energy to those who have routinely and historically been left out of environmental conversations while highlighting the knowledge and experiences of other community members is exactly what I hoped for when beginning to work in the environmental sector. The power that communities can have by hearing stories from people who look like them while gaining the information to help them succeed is a powerful force. I cannot wait to see how these partnerships and programs continue to grow throughout my service year and what steps can be made in making the environmental sphere within Oregon to a more equitable and inclusive sector.

Save the Date! We’re publishing our RFP soon!!

Chris Abosamra: Water Quality

Salma Preppernau

I've always had a strong connection and interest in being on the water. Being a recent graduate and majoring in Environmental Sciences, I came to appreciate all the aspects of the degree. One aspect that caught my eye during my time in college was water quality. This subject really caught my attention in school and I believe it was because of the amount of time I spent kayaking, swimming in lakes, and floating down rivers growing up. I guess I have my family to thank for that. They always made an effort to get us outdoors at a young age and even if we didn't want to, they made us. I come to realize how thankful I am for them that they pushed me to be more connected with nature.

This is why when Confluence gave us the opportunity to use our individual development hours to do something that interested us, I took advantage. I decided it would be a good idea to not only spend some time on the rivers here in Oregon, but also make a difference along the way. So I came up with the idea with my fellow AmeriCorps Member, Kristina Peterson, to do river clean up.  We thought we would start by doing it on the Willamette river, near West Linn.

We paddled along the Willamette picking up any trash we could see floating alongside the water and planned to stop at an island called Hog Island. It is also known as Oak Island, monitored by the Willamette Riverkeepers, and is home to native plants such as the Oregon White Oak, Douglas Fir, and many more. At first glance we were not sure if we would find a lot of trash, but we did. Interesting items like pencil sharpeners, Lego toys, gold balls, and even a few tires! We spent a few hours cleaning and exploring the island. It can be sad to know how some people treat our Earth, but we have to remember that there are also people here that will protect it. It’s a nice feeling when your service gives you the developmental freedom to pursue your own interests and do something that makes you happy. The experience was both rewarding and relaxing, something that we plan to do more in the warmer months!

Member Spotlight: Emily Lilly

Salma Preppernau

Emily Lilly is a Confluence AmeriCorps Member serving a second term as a Food Security & Garden Coordinator with the Housing Authority of Clackamas County.

Emily’s primary focus with HACC is to provide knowledge about gardening methods and solutions to help residents with food security at two community gardens in Clackamas Heights & Hillsdale.

20200727_161319 (2).jpg

Emily has said about her service:

“I've learned so much serving as a Confluence AmeriCorps (Member). I’m learning so much more about myself and finding out I love to teach people how to garden.”

“It is a full time job maintaining a community garden. I feel like I never have enough time in the day, but the rewarding experience with residents and how excited they are about growing their own food is an amazing feeling.”

“Working with all different types of people has made me realize that everyone has a different story, background, and not everything is as it seems. Treating people equally means everyone gets a chance regardless of their background, color, or history.”

em.jpg

Emily’s Supervisor said about her service:

“Emily has an amazing work ethic and always brings her best to whatever she is engaged in. I have appreciated that and have often been inspired by her in that way.”

“Emily has also been a strong advocate for making sure that we are doing outreach to and communicating important information with residents with disabilities and to residents for whom English is a second language.”

We are so lucky to know Emily Lilly! We would like to thank her for her service and welcome her back for a second term. We hope you keep learning and we can’t wait to see what you teach us & this new cohort.

Thank you all for your perseverance and continued commitment to service!

We Stand With You

Salma Preppernau

As an organization that strives to advance environmental equity and social & environmental justice, we are deeply saddened by the murder of George Floyd, the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor , and the ongoing harm to the black community in America. In an effort to continue bringing together streams of thought, action, and people to make the environmental movement more robust, inclusive, and effective we want to use this time to support our members and partners of color and center black voices in our community.

As protests continue and as our community fights for change, we will make an effort to amplify the voices of organizations that are POC led and that support and promote people and communities of color. Today we are participating in #blackouttuesday but that doesn’t mean that we’re being silent! This means that today and in the coming days we will be promoting black voices in an effort to stand with the black community in solidarity.

Please take care of yourselves and of each other and please reach out to us if you are looking for resources or support.

What Are Our Members Up To?

Salma Preppernau

Our 19-20 AmeriCorps Members are still ‘getting things done for America!’

Since the start of this national emergency, more than 8,500 AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers have served in direct response to COVID-19. Their stories of service demonstrate their commitment to “get things done” for the communities that are counting on them. Our Confluence AmeriCorps Members continue to serve our communities in impactful ways and we’re grateful for their perseverance in the face of this challenge!

While our members are teleserving, we’ve been able to meet (remotely) as a team a number of times and we’re starting to wrap up the service year with Final Site Visits and look towards (virtual) Commencement.

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS

May Team Meeting: History of the Willamette & Columbia Rivers - Facilitated by Ali McGarigal & Allena Vestal

Our facilitators shared some history about the Willamette and Columbia Rivers and the Indigenous peoples of this area with a focus on the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde. We were joined by Ed Edmo (Shoshone-Bannock), a highly respected local poet, playwright, performer, traditional storyteller, tour guide, and lecturer on PNW tribal culture. It was a tremendous joy to have Ed and we are grateful for his stories of Celilo Falls and for making all of us smile! Ali & Allena also put together a thorough resource list that Confluence is lucky to have and be able to share with future members. Thank you Ali, Allena, & Ed Edmo!

CEC Temporary Closure

Salma Preppernau

We would like to notify our supporters and our community that due to concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19 TaborSpace and the CEC office have closed effective immediately. The closure is expected to last at least two weeks and all Confluence AmeriCorps Training and Events have been cancelled through April 10th, possibly longer.

We want to continue to provide updates as new information is available and as we receive guidance from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Our Program Director Elizabeth Cabral, our Operations Coordinator Ashlie Tainer, and our Program and Outreach Coordinator Samantha Vernon are all working remotely and are available by email.

Goodbye: Q&A with Sherrie Jackson

Salma Preppernau

It is with a mix of gratitude and sadness that Confluence Environmental Center announces the departure of Sherrie Jackson as our Operations Coordinator. Sherrie played a pivotal role in founding Confluence Environmental Center and developing the AmeriCorps Program and she will be greatly missed by our staff, our board, our members and our partners. We want to thank her for her 8 years of service with Confluence and for her 25 years of service and dedication to the AmeriCorps Program (holy moly!) Some of her accomplishments with Confluence include:

  • Transitioning NW Service Academy into Confluence Environmental Center

  • Recruiting and supporting over 175 Confluence AmeriCorps Members

  • Provided training for over 25 project supervisors annually on recruitment practices focused on equity, diversity and inclusion, implicit bias, structural racism in the workplace, and sustaining a diverse workforce

  • Researched, designed and conducted outreach strategies on racial equity that included community events, tabling, workshops, relationship building and networking.

  • Developed and managed a $600K annual federally funded budget that supported 3 staff and 22 AmeriCorps Members

  • Kept an incredible sense of humor

We appreciate the thought that Sherrie has put into the timing of her departure and her commitment to ensuring that this transition is as smooth as possible. In the interim Sherrie’s responsibilities will be split between Elizabeth Cabral, Confluence Program Director and Samantha Vernon, Confluence Program and Outreach Coordinator while we search for a new Operations Coordinator to fill Sherrie’s role.

While Sherrie dedicated much of herself to this program, we believe that it’s healthy for organizations to undergo regular leadership changes to shake things up and bring in fresh new ideas. On that note it’s important to us that we’re transparent about the changes happening with Confluence. We’ll be including members of the Board of Directors, current AmeriCorps members, and current Partners in our search to fill Sherrie’s role.

If you have any questions about the transition or the organization, do not hesitate to reach out to the Board of Directors or to our Program Director Elizabeth Cabral.

Q&A with Sherrie

Q: What are you most proud of having worked on during your time with Confluence Environmental Center (CEC)?

A: Changing my perspective and attitude around traditional HR practices and helping to educate others on how we can infuse Diversity, Equity and Inclusion into hiring practices and create a healthier workplace culture.

Q: What’s something you’ve learned in your last 25 years with AmeriCorps that you’ll carry with you?

A: That serving your community has more power towards your health and well-being than you expect.  I don’t think of serving as a selfless act that benefits the community, but rather a selfish act that feeds the sole and creates better humans.

Q: What’s something that you contributed to CEC that you hope will continue after you’ve left?

A: Staff dressing up in costumes and taking pictures to send to Members on their birthday.

Q: What will you miss most about CEC?

A: All of it!  We built an amazing program and I am so proud of what it has become.  I am excited to see where it goes in the future.

Q: What advice do you have for the new Operations Coordinator?

A: Have fun and participate in all the Members events you can – they are always such an amazing group of people.

Q: What’s next?

A: I am going to be the new Director of Human Resources and Recruitment at the Mt. Adams Institute in Trout Lake, Washington.

Goodbye Rob!

rob loucks

After 8 years with Confluence, we say goodbye to Rob Loucks, our Program and Outreach Coordinator. He was with us since the beginning launching the Confluence AmeriCorps program and helping to guide it to where it is today. We wish him the best of luck on his new adventures and we promise to keep listening to Janelle Monae, celebrating Space Bat and making paper snowflakes in his honor.

Welcome Gaylen Beatty to our Board of Directors

rob loucks

We’re so excited to welcome Gaylen Beatty as our newest member to our Board of Directors.

Gaylen grew up in Los Angeles, California. Many summers included family camping trips
throughout the west coast and Canada. The privilege of those opportunities guided her life. She
has spent the last 25 years in the fields of conservation, outdoor education, youth corps and
park operations. She also founded the Portland region’s Backyard Habitat Certification Program
in 2006. Gaylen now works for Metro’s Parks and Nature. She manages a dynamic team of
senior regional planners that work on complex projects that focus on cross departmental
integration and collaboration that maximize equitable impacts. She received her
undergraduate degree from Humboldt State University in Oceanography, Masters in Science
Teaching from Portland State University and is honored to be a 2042 fellow for Center for
Diversity and the Environment. In her free time, Gaylen relishes family time at home, in the
garden on a beautiful spring day, or on a mountain enjoying first tracks with her Burton custom
board.
